I seguenti 6 sonetti, di epoca medievale, tratti dal codice Riccardiano N. 946 della Biblioteca Laurenziana di Firenze, furono pubblicati per la prima volta nel 1930 in un opuscolo a cura di M Mazzoni dal titolo Sonetti alchemici-Ermetici di Frate Elia e Cecco D’Ascoli, edito dalla Società Editrice Toscana.
La pubblicazione, venne ristampata, per quel che ne sappiamo, una sola volta, nel 1955 dalla Athanor.
Per esplicita ammissione del curatore , che senza addurre particolari motivazioni si dice convinto della attribuzione dei sonetti in questione a Frate Elia da Cortona, non vi sono né indicazioni né prove documentali che possano darci precise indicazioni sull’autore o sugli autori di questi sei sonetti. Nella pubblicazione manca inoltre qualsiasi informazione codicologica sul codice in questione.
Dall’opuscolo curato dal Mazzoni, ed ormai introvabile, trascrivo questi sei bei sonetti di argomento alchimistico. Ad ogni sonetto è aggiunta una versione in prosa in inglese.
The following six medieval sonnets, taken from Codex Riccardianus N. 946 available in the Biblioteca Laurenziana in Florence, were published for the first time in 1930 in a pamphlet edited by M. Mazzoni, bearing the title Sonetti Alchemici – Ermetici di Frate Elia e Cecco D’Ascoli, published by Società Editrice Toscana.
The pamphlet was reprinted, for all we know, only once in 1955 by Atanor (an Italian publishing house).
On the basis of an explicit statement by the editor, which, without any motivation, attributes the authorship to Frate Elia da Cortona, there is no evidence and no document which can validate this attribution. In the pamphlet, there is no paleographic information on that codex.
I extracted from that pamphlet, at present unavailable, these interesting sonnets about alchemical science. Every sonnet is available in an English version too.

monaco bianco pare a chi non sente ;
Ma lo re dell’universo spatio
di sciamito d’oro veste la sua gente
chollui si scontrò e folle e saggio ;
colerico bianco fa el suo sergente
Et è così benigno a chi l’uccide
che gli fa lume nella casa oscura
e di tristesa fallo ingiovanire.
Chi fa questo è di grande ardire :
Non altro che colui dal quarto cerchio

ENGLISH:
O ye pilgrims
going to hermitage,
in search of the excellent science,
your servant travels with it:
she looks like a white monk
to the unheeding ones.
But the King of the universal space,
he dresses his folk with golden drapes
and, mad and wise, he fought against it;
he makes his sergeant angrily white
and he is so good to the one killing him
that he lightens the dark house and,
with sadness, he makes him young again.
The man who does this is very bold: like
the one in the fourth circle of the hell,
martyr under the soil.

Corpo disfò e poi rifò un corpo

ENGLISH:
I am the true light of the supreme alchemy,
I dissipate the darkness
engulfing unrefined souls,
I am the one that truly
shows what men can do with the art.
I am the one that takes out
from poverty and restraints
the men who want to use me.
with the art, the rule and the way,
with its righteous aim, with his cooking,
I dissolve the body, then I remake it,
free from its matter, and then I model it,
always bearing in mind the poisonous purpose.
I take out from its matter and I give form

If you understood well what I’ve just explained to you,
you would never forget it.

Quest’è la pietra magna benedetta
la qual tractò Ermete et Gratiano,
Elit, Rosir, Pandolfo e Ortolano,
Pictagora con tutta la sua secta.
Questa non si concede a gentilesa
né a bellesa, né a esser humano,
di questo ogni pensiero torna vano
a chi per sua virtù la gratia aspetta.
Di gratia speciale, da Dio recetta
basse vivande, vivere mesano,
sua residensa sta in piccole tetta
De’ tu che miri la figura picta
riman contento, e bastite sapere
quanto el balestro la saecta gitta.
E nello amore di Dio sta felice
e non voler saper quel che non lice !
ENGLISH:
This is the great, blessed stone
about which spoke Hermes and Gratianus,
Elit, Rosir, Pandolphus and Hortolanus,
and Pythagoras with all his sect.
It does not give in to neither kindness,
nor beauty, nor human being;
if a men waits for its grace,
he doth hope in vain.
This special grace, coming from God,
is: eating simple food and leading a simple life,
because it dwells in a little house.
O you looking at the painted symbol,
stay happy and content yourself to know
how far your arrow can go.
Be happy in God’s love,
and do not try to know what you have not to know !

Questa è la pietra che si va cercando
dagli alchimisti per ogni sentiero
da color che hanno l’animo sincero,
ma non da quei che vanno sofisticando.
A tutti quanti loro vò dare bando,
però che sono tutti ingannatori,
e non cognoscono e loro errori ;
per tutto el mondo vanno trapolando
Di solfo e di mercurio farò, quando
io vorrò, tutto l’arte a punto ;
e co’ l’arsenico, ch’è il terzo congiunto,
col sale armoniaco imbeverando
farò di tutti quanti un congiunto,
putrefaciendo e poi lor calcinando :
E fassi un corpo, et è Elisir perfetto ;
dicoti el vero, per Dio benedetto !
ENGLISH:
This is the stone
the alchemists are looking for,
following every path;
but only the ones with a sincere soul,
not the sophistic ones.
I want to ban the latter,
because they are all deceivers
and they do not know their mistakes;
setting traps, they go everywhere.
Using sulphur and mercury, I practise the art
every time I want.
And with the arsenic, the third,
soaking them with the harmoniac salt,
I will make them one,
making them rot and then calcining them.
And lo! A body creates itself: the perfect elixir;
I speak the truth, God be blessed!

andate sofisticando e nessuno crede

ché, come dice Cristo, più beato

col dito la ferita tanto ulenta.
Quest’è la pietra ch’è tanto lucente
La qual trattò la gran Turba magna,
e dimostrasi a ciascuno intendente ;
la bella Rosa tratta certamente
delle scritture di quella compagna,
la qual parlò sì scuro a ogni gente.
El sole colla luna intendi il mio parlare
E col nostro mercurio seguitare.
ENGLISH:
O ye ungrateful alchemists, more doubtful
than Thomas, you use sophisms but nobody
believes in the truth you are showing,
even if it is before you.
Bring your mind to the heart, because, as Christ says,
more blessed will be the one who will not touch
with his finger the grievous wound.
This is the stone so shining
about wich spoke the great Turba,
showing itself to the wise.
Surely the pretty Rose deals
with the writings of that companion,
if speaking in an obscure manner to everyone.
Join the sun with the moon,
understand my words and
continue with our mercury.

lavori invano e perdi el tempo tuo,

e tutti due fanno conjuntione
nel ventre del lione a te saputo,
alora ti puoi tocare sotto al belico
e dire : i’ son ,maestro certamente
e nessun altro vale un lombrico.
Sarà Elisir perfetto in fede mia,
e potrai combattere la Saracinia
ENGLISH:
Understand and pay attention to what I say to you:
The soul does not join but with its body,
when it is extracted without body;
this is the truth, o dear friend!
If you join an element with its enemy,
you are striving in vain,
you waste your time,
because the other is not its brother,
and so your work is not worth a brass farthing.
But when it joins with its friend,
they unite themselves
in the lion’s womb that you know.
Then you can touch yourself under the navel
and you can say: “Of course I am a master and nobody else is worth a worm!”
This I swear: you could get the perfect Elixir and
so you could fight the Muslims.
