David de Planis Campy (1589-c.1644), French alchemist, physician and surgeon. The circular French inscription gives his name and states that here, in 1627, he is in his 38th year and is surgeon to the French King (at the time, Louis XIII). The term ‘edelphe’ refers to him being a follower of the theories of Paracelsus, also indicated by references to the microcosm and macrocosm on the book in front of him. Planis Campy wrote on phlebotomy, musket wounds, the plague, and mineral and chemical remedies. This artwork, with additional French text at bottom, is from Planis Campy’s ‘Bouquet compose des plus belles fleurs’ (1629).
